Shilajit Resin: Nature’s Ancient Superfood

Shilajit Resin: Nature’s Ancient Superfood

There aren't many supplements with a three thousand year track record, but Shilajit is one of them. Known in ancient tradition as the "Conqueror of Mountains", it's been a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine since before most of what we now call Western civilisation got going. The fact that it's only recently started appearing on the radar of people outside of South Asia and Central Asia says more about how slowly traditional knowledge travels West than it does about the substance itself.

So what is it? Shilajit is a tar-like resin that seeps from rock crevices in high-altitude mountain ranges -- primarily the Himalayas, the Altai, the Caucasus -- during warmer months, as the sun's heat causes centuries of compressed plant and microbial matter to slowly exude from the rock. It's not glamorous to describe, but the composition that results from that process is genuinely remarkable.

A Bit of History

Shilajit is documented in ancient Sanskrit texts including the Sushruta Samhita and the Rasarangini, where it's classified as a rasayana -- a rejuvenating substance used to promote longevity, vitality and balance. In Himalayan communities it was traditionally consumed dissolved in warm milk, often by children, to build strength and stamina. Sherpas, whose endurance and longevity have long puzzled researchers, have used it for generations. In Tibet, Afghanistan and Central Asia it was known variously as "mountain blood" or "sweat of the mountains" and valued as an aphrodisiac and performance enhancer in the broadest sense of that term.

Today it's available in resin, powder, capsule and gummy form. The resin is the most potent and most authentic format -- dissolved in warm water, milk, coffee or tea. I use warm water personally, it's the simplest approach.

What the Research Says

Shilajit's benefits are largely attributed to its high fulvic acid content and over 80 trace minerals in ionic form -- meaning they're in a state the body can absorb directly rather than having to convert first.

The energy side of things is probably the most studied. Shilajit has been shown to enhance mitochondrial function, supporting the production of ATP -- the body's primary energy currency. Emerging research has also looked at its potential in chronic fatigue syndrome, with some early findings suggesting it may help improve cellular energy production in people experiencing persistent fatigue.

Cognitive health is another active area. Fulvic acid may inhibit the accumulation of tau proteins, which are linked to Alzheimer's disease, and researchers have looked at its potential to support memory, focus and mental clarity -- though as with most research in this space, larger human trials are still needed.

For men specifically, a 90-day placebo-controlled study demonstrated significant increases in testosterone levels among participants taking shilajit compared to a placebo group, alongside improvements in sperm count and motility. It's one of the more robust pieces of human data behind any supplement in the testosterone support category.

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties are also well documented, driven largely by the fulvic acid content, with minerals like zinc and selenium contributing to immune function. Some research has looked at bone density support in postmenopausal women with osteopenia, and at shilajit's potential role in muscle recovery through improved nutrient delivery and reduced inflammation.

Honest caveat: a lot of the wider evidence still comes from traditional use, animal studies, and smaller human trials. The direction is consistently positive, but more large-scale clinical research is still needed across most of these areas. Worth knowing before you buy.

What Makes Our Shilajit Different

Fulvic acid content is the key quality marker in shilajit, and it varies enormously between products. Himalayan shilajit -- generally considered the gold standard -- can reach 75% fulvic acid in premium products. Our shilajit resin, independently batch tested, comes in at 88.9% fulvic acid. We haven't found anything that comes close to that among our competitors. Some brands advertise theirs as the most powerful available and then publish lab results showing 68%. Make of that what you will.

The heavy metal content is the other thing worth checking, and it's the thing most sellers don't mention at all. Ours comes in at 0.001% -- the lowest we've found anywhere on the market.

Both our Shilajit Resin from Feel Supreme and our Feel Supreme Shilajit Capsules are batch tested for both purity and heavy metal content, results available. That's a standard we'd encourage you to hold any shilajit brand to.

Altai Shilajit Resin

Where It Comes From

Our shilajit is harvested from the Altai Mountain ranges in Mongolia rather than the Himalayas -- and we genuinely believe this is one of the best kept secrets in the category. The high-altitude harvesting, typically between 8,000 and 16,000 feet, minimises contamination. The raw resin is dissolved in water, filtered to remove impurities and dried under controlled low heat to preserve potency. Feel Supreme's sourcing prioritises sustainable harvesting practices and fair labour conditions -- something worth looking at when you're buying from regions where neither is guaranteed.

How to Use It

Start with a pea-sized amount -- roughly 150-300mg -- dissolved in warm water, milk, or any warm drink daily. Avoid very hot liquids as they can affect potency. If you find the taste off-putting (it's earthy, to put it politely), the capsule format is a straightforward alternative.

Effects like improved energy or mental clarity are typically reported within days to a few weeks of consistent use. As with most supplements working at a cellular or hormonal level, consistency matters more than loading up the dose.

One thing worth saying clearly: don't take shilajit if you have sickle cell anaemia, haemochromatosis, or thalassemia. If you develop a rash, increased heart rate, or dizziness, stop taking it. And as always, if you're on medications or have any existing health conditions, talk to your GP before adding it to your routine.
