Functional Mushrooms: A Practical Guide

Functional or "medicinal" mushrooms have moved from the fringes to the mainstream in Ireland over the last decade. Proponents like Paul Stamets and a growing community of informed customers have driven the conversation, but the underlying traditions go back thousands of years.

Mushrooms and fungi of many varieties have been used in traditional Chinese, Tibetan and Japanese medicine for two millennia, both for specific ailments and as general tonics. What's changed recently is the volume of modern research being done on the same varieties traditional systems already valued, and the variety of formats they're now available in - powdered, capsules, liquid extracts, mushroom coffees, teas and elixirs.

Mushroom Based Supplements

The varieties that get the most attention - Cordyceps, Lion's Mane, Reishi, Chaga, Turkey Tail and Shiitake - now have meaningful bodies of human research behind them. Not all of it is conclusive, and food supplements are not medicines, but the direction of the research is increasingly clear.

Here's a practical overview of the main varieties we stock at Powerful.ie, what they're traditionally used for, and what the research is currently looking at.

Cordyceps - Traditional Endurance Tonic

Himalayas where Cordyceps growsCordyceps - particularly Cordyceps sinensis and the cultivated Cordyceps militaris - has been used in traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine for over a thousand years as a tonic for vitality and stamina. It came to wider Western attention in 1993, when Ma Junren's Chinese Women's Olympic running team broke five world records and attributed part of their preparation to Cordyceps supplementation. The folk origin story describes shepherds in the Himalayas observing their herds becoming lethargic at altitude, then returning to vitality after grazing on the fungi.

The research focus today is exercise performance and oxygen utilisation. Cordyceps is studied for its interaction with ATP metabolism - the cellular energy system the body runs on - and with aerobic capacity. Clinical trials have looked at VO2max, time to exhaustion, and the lactate threshold, with positive findings in several randomised controlled studies. Results vary by population (trained athletes versus older adults) and dose, but the pattern is consistent enough that Cordyceps is now mainstream in performance nutrition formulas.

We stock Cordyceps in liquid extract and capsule form, both 10:1 full fruiting body extracts of organically grown Cordyceps militaris.

Lion's Mane - The Original Nootropic Mushroom

Nootropics - supplements studied for their effects on cognition, memory, focus and motivation - have become a category in their own right over the last decade. Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is often described as the original nootropic mushroom, and the research interest is well-earned.

The active area of research is cognitive function and Lion's Mane's role in supporting NGF (Nerve Growth Factor) - a protein central to the growth, maintenance and survival of nerve cells. Compounds in Lion's Mane (hericenones in the fruiting body, erinacines in the mycelium) have been studied for their ability to stimulate NGF production. This is part of why Lion's Mane has attracted research interest in the context of age-related cognitive decline, with early-stage human trials examining its effects on mild cognitive impairment alongside its more general nootropic use.

Lion's Mane Mushroom

We stock Lion's Mane in liquid extract form from Feel Supreme and in other formats, alongside Lion's Mane-containing nootropic stacks.

Reishi - The "Mushroom of Immortality"

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), known in Chinese tradition as Lingzhi, has been used for over 2,000 years and was so revered it appears in ancient Chinese art as a "bridge connecting heaven to earth", a symbol of spirituality and longevity. The traditional positioning of Reishi is as a tonic for general resilience, immune balance and longevity.

Reishi Mushroom

Reishi has been the subject of significant modern research, including studies examining the potential anti-tumour activity of its triterpene compounds. Most of this evidence is preclinical (cell and animal studies rather than large human trials), but it's part of why Reishi has drawn so much attention from researchers as well as traditional practitioners.

The research interest also extends to Reishi's adaptogenic profile - how it interacts with the body's stress response - and to its beta-glucan content, the polysaccharide class associated with immune cell modulation across the medicinal mushroom family. As an adaptogen, Reishi is studied for its effects on the sympathoadrenal system, which regulates the body's stress response. Its anti-inflammatory properties have also been studied extensively, alongside its long-standing traditional use.

The compounds drawing most research attention are the triterpenes (a class unique to Ganoderma) and the beta-glucan polysaccharides, both of which are extracted more effectively by dual extraction (water and alcohol) than by hot water alone.

We stock Reishi as a dual-extracted liquid tincture from Feel Supreme - 10:1 full fruiting body extract, 60ml.

Chaga - Antioxidants, Beta-Glucans, and Research Interest

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a parasitic fungus that grows primarily on birch trees in cold northern climates. It has been used in traditional Russian, Eastern European and East Asian medicine for centuries, often brewed as a tea for general immune and energy support.Chaga Mushroom

The modern interest in Chaga centres on its antioxidant content - it has one of the highest ORAC scores of any natural food - and its beta-glucan polysaccharides. Research has also investigated Chaga's compounds in the context of cellular health, including cholesterol metabolism and preclinical tumour-cell studies, though most of the evidence to date is at the laboratory and animal stage rather than human trials.

Turkey Tail - The Most-Studied Medicinal Mushroom

Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor, formerly Coriolus versicolor) is one of the most-studied medicinal mushrooms in modern research. Its beta-glucan content - specifically the compounds known as PSK and PSP - has been the subject of decades of clinical research, particularly in Japan and China where it has been used alongside conventional medicine in oncology settings.

For general wellness use, Turkey Tail is studied primarily for its role in immune support and gut microbiome health. We stock it as a dual-extracted liquid from Feel Supreme.

Shiitake - The Everyday Functional Mushroom

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is the most familiar of the functional mushrooms, since most people have eaten it as food. It is a genuine superfood in the strict sense - high in B vitamins, vitamin D (particularly when sun-exposed), selenium and other minerals. It has been used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine for centuries, where it has long been associated with cardiovascular and circulation support.

The active compound of greatest research interest is lentinan, a beta-glucan polysaccharide that has been extensively studied for its effects on immune cell activity. Shiitake also contains eritadenine, which is studied in cardiovascular research, including its effects on cholesterol and blood pressure markers.

Beyond the Familiar Six

Not only are mushrooms functional, medicinal and nourishing, they are also a genuine superfood in their own right - low in calories, high in protein, rich in B and D vitamins, minerals and fibre. There are over 2,000 edible species among the roughly 1.5 million varieties of mushrooms and fungi worldwide.

And the most interesting research is arguably still to come. Medicine, psychiatry and psychotherapy are now exploring potential applications for mushrooms in addressing issues like depression, end-of-life anxiety and addiction. Modern researchers such as those at M.A.P.S. (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) and the Heffter Institute are leading wider research into these possibilities. The depth of our evolutionary relationship with fungi may still be only partially understood.
