Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor, formerly Coriolus versicolor) is one of the most thoroughly studied medicinal mushrooms in the world - and one of the oldest in continuous use. References to it appear in Chinese medical texts dating back nearly 2,000 years, where it was prized for supporting overall vitality. In modern Japan, two of its isolated compounds (PSK and PSP) have been studied extensively in clinical research settings since the 1970s.

Why Turkey Tail? The beta-glucan story

Turkey Tail is rich in polysaccharides - particularly beta-glucans, including the well-studied PSK (polysaccharide-K) and PSP (polysaccharopeptide). Beta-glucans are long-chain sugars found in the cell walls of medicinal mushrooms, and they're the compounds most modern research has focused on.

A 2019 study published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine examined how Turkey Tail mycelium interacts with immune cell receptors in vitro, finding it activated multiple pathways involved in innate immune response, including pathways linked to natural killer (NK) cell function and the production of immune signalling molecules.

A separate Phase 1 clinical trial conducted at Bastyr University and funded by the US National Institutes of Health observed dose-dependent increases in natural killer cell activity and lymphocyte counts in adults taking Turkey Tail extract over a six-week period.

It's worth being clear about what this research means and doesn't mean. Turkey Tail is a food supplement, not a medicine. Its compounds have a long history of traditional use and an active modern research base, but we're not making any claims that it treats, prevents or cures any condition. What the research does suggest is that it interacts meaningfully with the immune system - which is why it's been used for centuries and why scientists keep studying it.

Why a liquid extract?

Most Turkey Tail products on the market are capsules of dried mushroom powder. This is a 10:1 concentrated tincture, which means 10kg of raw mushroom yields 1kg of finished extract - so each dropper delivers significantly more of the active polysaccharides than a typical capsule.

Liquid extracts also absorb faster than capsules. You can take it directly under the tongue, mixed into water, coffee, smoothies, or tea. No swallowing capsules, no waiting for digestion - the active compounds reach circulation more quickly.

How to take it

Three pipettes (1.5ml) daily, either directly into the mouth or mixed into your preferred drink. At three pipettes per serving, the 60ml bottle delivers around 40 servings - approximately 6 weeks of daily use.

You can take it any time of day. There's no caffeine and no stimulant effect. Many people take it consistently for several weeks at a time, then take a break, then return to it - the traditional approach. Others take it daily through autumn and winter as part of a seasonal routine.
